Thank you for your interest in acquiring a Regal Thai puppy! As a potential dog owner you should first ask yourself a few serious questions. The most important being, are you prepared for the responsibility of taking care of an animal? A dog can live fifteen or more years, it is a long commitment. Beyond the physical responsibility there is also the financial responsibility. The actual purchase of the animal, trips to the vet, food, etc. Next, what is your purpose for the dog? Will it be strictly for companionship? Do you intend to use your dog for security purposes? Maybe, you plan on breeding or showing your dog in the future? All of the above factors should be considered before making the major step of becoming a responsible dog owner. Before selecting a Thai Ridgeback puppy, or any other breed of dog, please make sure you take the time to think things over seriously before acquiring a puppy.

All dog breeds were bred for either form or an original function. Today the primary purpose of ownership of dogs is for companionship. Although we think of dogs as "domesticated" they are still animals, and to this day still maintain many of the same instincts for the purpose of which they were originally bred. When considering the temperament of the Thai Ridgeback dog, it must be taken into consideration that they have been used for centuries as a hunter, a guard dog, and companion. They were often expected to fend for themselves and hunt on their own for food, evolving the Thai Ridgeback into an independent animal able to survive on its own. This independence characteristic of the animal has evolved the Thai Ridgeback into an animal with extreme intelligence.

The overall personality of the Thai Ridgeback is generally easy going and alert. The dog may seem lazy at times. Most dogs enjoy lying during the day a great deal, due to the hot tropical climate in Thailand. Make no mistake the dog can be quick and responsive in a moments notice. They have a great joy for life, and love the comforts of home and their master. They are very affectionate animals with their family. They generally are not very hyper dogs. They do require their regular daily periods of exercise. A brief run will satisfy their need to release energy and keep them in good physical condition. Warning! Thai Ridgebacks will discover the warmest, sun filled spot in the home, should that spot be on your soft bed or sofa even better. Should you find your dog sleeping on your furniture not your liking, corrective action must be strictly enforced at a young age.

The dogs use as a hunting dog has contributed a great deal to the overall development of its personality also. They are very alert and aware of their surroundings. Most still have their natural instincts to hunt and love the thrill of a good chase. The breed is exceptionally quick and graceful, and is blessed with extraordinary jumping capabilities. In Asia, the wild boar was an ever present danger, known to attack and kill hunters. The dog often accompanied their master on hunting trips into the wilderness. The wild boar was a greatly feared, fierce predator. The dog would accompany their masters on their hunting trips in packs. Should the master encounter a wild boar, the hunter would challenge the boar. The Thai Ridgeback’s natural instinct to protect their masters from harm would be set into action. The dogs would subsequently provide a meal for themselves and their master. The natural instinct of protection evolved over thousands of years. This instinct to protect their masters and family from danger still exists today.

A fenced yard is a must to provide safety for your dog from wandering in pursuit of prey or curiosity. Please make sure your dog has a collar with an identification tag should it ever get away from you or manage to make it out of your yard. Thai Ridgebacks can live with small animals. Introductions should be made preferably at a young age. The younger the introduction between animals the better.

The Thai Ridgeback is an affectionate fun loving dog. Extremely playful with their owners, when they are in play mode they can whip themselves into a frenzy. Their attitude towards strangers can vary considerably ranging from shy to cautious, total disinterest, to extremely sociable. In general, they tend to be cautious with strangers and very selective with whom they choose to associate with. They can be attracted to one individual and totally ignore another. Over time, and with re-introduction they seem to warm up to everyone. It is of vital importance that puppies get a lot of early socializing, the earlier the better. The first year being of major importance, in particular during the first four months, as this is the prime time for a puppy in developing good social skills. It is very important that the puppy have plenty of human interaction. The importance of socializing is a vital element to a happy puppy and will build the foundation for a well adjusted adult dog.
